Chanderi fabric derived it's name from the town of Chanderi, Madhya Pradhesh. Chanderi fabric's beauty lies in is its lightness, soft texture, transparency factor and subtle luxurious appearance with golden embellishments. Chanderi saris were considered once as a symbol of royalty as it was a favored fabric among the ancient royal families from central India.

Chanderi fabric is produced by weaving silk and zari over simple cotton yarn that gives a shimmering texture to it. The fabric is used in producing wide range of products like chanderi silk and cotton saris, chanderi salwar suits, dresses, tunics, tops, skirts, safas, pagdis, dupattas, lugadas and scarfs. Chanderi fabrics are not only popular in central India, but also across the country.

Design and Production

The different stages of this century old Chanderi fabric production involves procurement of raw material, dyeing, post dyeing warping, passing the warp through reed, design of the border and weaving.  The major three types of chanderi fabric produced are pure silk chanderi, pure cotton chanderi and pure silk- cotton chanderi.  Chanderi fabric gets its shine and transparency because of non- degumming of the raw yarn.

Unique motifs handwoven with the use of different needles are markers of this sophisticated fabric. Beautiful motifs such as coins, floral patterns, peacocks, animals, geometrical patterns adorn this fabric. Some motifs including nalferma, dandidar, chatai, jangla are most exclusive to chanderi weaves. These handwoven motifs are permanent in nature as it refuses to lose its form even after several wear and tear, unlike the motifs woven out of Power Loom wefts.
