Gadwal Silks
Gadwal silk sarees are considered world famous for handloom zari sarees. It is woven in the historic town of Gadwal, in the state of Telengana. They are most notable for the intricate zari weaving designs on the saree. The best part of a Gadwal saree is that it can be folded to match the size of a match box without ruining any part of the saree. Gadwal handlooms are quite popular for the durability of the various colour mixtures that are used in the yarn.
Weaving Technique
The process of making a Gadwal Saree starts with dyeing the silk or cotton yarn. After drying the dyed yarn, it is then rolled over small sticks and finally converted to thread. The yarn is now loaded as warp into the loom for the actual process of weaving. Gadwal Sarees are woven traditionally according to the interlocked-weft technique (Kuppadam or Tippadam) or Kotakomma (Kumbam) with respect to the weaving style of the borders.
Variants
Silk or Cotton, or amalgam of the two (Sico) defines the Gadwal sarees the best. The sico variety is more famous than the regular silk variety of Gadwal. Another admirable feature of Gadwal Silk weaving is fascinating “ Kuttu” borders. Kuttu is a form of style, wherein, the pallu and border of the saree is attached to the main saree after being woven separately. The count used in weaving technique results in the softness as well as the hardness of the fabric.
